Tielemans Turned Down Saudi Millions. A Childhood Dream Sold Him on United.

Manchester United’s summer transfer window just took a sharp turn nobody saw plotted on paper. After spending weeks chasing two Brazilian midfielders and locking up one deal, the club abruptly shifted gears over the weekend and landed Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35 million. And according to multiple reports, the Belgian international had his mind made up long before negotiations started.

Tielemans wanted to be a Manchester United player since he was a kid. When the chance finally arrived, he didn’t hesitate. That meant turning down interest from Saudi Pro League clubs that would have paid him significantly more money. But for a guy who grew up idolizing United and even shares their “Red Devils” nickname from his time captaining Belgium, the call was apparently simple.

United’s hierarchy had been working the Tielemans deal behind the scenes over the weekend, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Italian transfer insider said on his YouTube channel that Tielemans agreed to all contract conditions and was excited by the prospect of playing at Old Trafford. David Ornstein also reported that the midfielder rejected other offers once United came calling.

How a failed medical flipped United’s midfield plans

Let’s back up a bit. United had already agreed a £39 million deal with Atalanta for Ederson and a £50 million deal with Chelsea for Andrey Santos. Santos is still coming. But Ederson’s move collapsed after a failed medical, which sent INEOS scrambling for an alternative. They found Tielemans’s £35 million release clause at Villa Park and moved fast.

Aston Villa didn’t want to lose him. They reportedly offered him improved terms to remove that clause and keep him away from suitors. It didn’t matter. Unai Emery’s side couldn’t stop United once Tielemans gave the green light. He’s expected at Carrington tomorrow for a medical and could be announced shortly after.

Tielemans’s World Cup run ended early but his dream didn’t

Belgium’s World Cup campaign ended Friday night in Los Angeles with a 2-1 loss to Spain. Tielemans played through the tournament as captain despite a hamstring injury that kept him out of the quarterfinal. The injury isn’t serious, which is a relief for United fans after watching other midfield arrivals struggle with fitness issues at Old Trafford.

Before that Spain loss, Tielemans had a solid tournament. He scored a brace in a wild 3-2 comeback win over Senegal in the round of 32, including a last-minute penalty. He also put up three goals and two assists during qualifying. Not bad for a guy whose club future was uncertain until a few days ago.

TalkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs reported that multiple Saudi clubs were keen on signing Tielemans. The money would have been better. The lifestyle would have been different. But Tielemans only had eyes for Manchester. He informed United of his decision once Belgium’s World Cup ended, and the dominoes fell fast after that.

United now adds a 29-year-old experienced midfielder with Premier League pedigree, a Europa League winner’s medal, and something that can’t be bought: a childhood dream that finally came true.
