Danny Green Questions Tyler Herro’s Judgment After Leaked DMs Sparked Fight With Bam Adebayo

The NBA Summer League in Las Vegas is usually a time for rookies and unsigned free agents to make an impression. But this year, the biggest story coming out of Vegas had nothing to do with the actual basketball being played.

It started with Instagram DMs that weren’t supposed to be public. Tyler Herro was talking to a fan about his former Miami Heat teammate Bam Adebayo. And whatever Herro said, it wasn’t flattering. The messages leaked. Adebayo saw them. And by the time the two ended up in the same city this weekend, things got physical.

Former NBA wing Danny Green weighed in on the situation during an episode of his podcast, and he didn’t exactly defend Herro’s decision-making here.

“You know it’s coming to light. I don’t think he’s the brightest tool in the shed, but he’s not the dullest tool in the shed,” Green said. “I don’t think he’s that dumb to think ‘Oh, this is never going to get out.’ Maybe he had conversed with this person before and they had trusted conversations and maybe he thought ‘Oh, this person is pretty cool. I don’t think it’ll get out.’ But at this point it’s like you don’t care. If you’re doing this talking to a fan and not a close friend, you should know there’s a good chance of this getting to the people.”

Green’s point is pretty straightforward. If you’re an NBA player with millions of followers and you’re venting to a random account instead of a close friend, you’re basically asking for trouble. Herro might not have expected this specific fan to betray his confidence. But in 2026, leaked DMs are basically a rite of passage for athletes who get too comfortable.

What Herro Said and Why It Hit a Nerve

The exact contents of the messages haven’t been fully published everywhere, but the gist is that Herro had some frustrations about Adebayo that he wanted to get off his chest. And it clearly wasn’t the kind of thing you’d want your former teammate to read.

According to reports, some ex-Heat players have quietly felt that Adebayo never really had to deal with trade rumors the way other guys on the team did. Herro, by contrast, has been floated in trade talks for years — going back to the Heat’s pursuit of Damian Lillard. That kind of thing can breed resentment, especially when you’re the one repeatedly hearing your name in proposals.

But taking that frustration to DMs with a stranger? That’s where Green thinks Herro lost the plot.

Where Do the Heat Stand Now?

The Heat organization hasn’t commented publicly on the altercation. Neither Herro nor Adebayo have said anything directly about what happened. But the fact that it escalated to a physical confrontation in Las Vegas suggests this wasn’t just a minor misunderstanding.

Herro and Adebayo are both still under contract with Miami. So whatever happens next, the team will have to manage this internally. Teammates have gotten into fights before and moved on. But the public nature of this one — the leaked DMs, the podcast commentary, the Vegas setting — makes it harder to just sweep under the rug.

Green summed it up about as well as anyone could. Herro isn’t dumb. But he might have been careless. And in the NBA, careless gets exposed.
