One Position Group Could Derail Philadelphia’s Super Bowl Push in 2026

The Philadelphia Eagles won Super Bowl 59 just over a year ago. They did it with a nasty defense, a ground game that wore people out, and enough weapons in the passing game to keep defenses honest. Then the offseason hit. And hit again.

Howie Roseman worked the margins after the championship, bringing in replacements for the guys who left. The Eagles still looked like a real threat to repeat. But they didn’t. They won three fewer games, got bounced in the wild card round, and now the roster looks different again. One spot that used to be a strength? It’s now a real problem.

The receiver room got blown up this offseason. For years, Philly had one of the best one-two punches in the league with A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Brown brought the physical stuff, the contested catches, the yards after contact. Smith runs routes like he’s drawing them up himself and has reliable hands. It worked.

But there was always drama around Brown. It finally boiled over when the Eagles shipped him to New England. They had a replacement lined up, sort of. They drafted Makai Lemon in the first round and traded for Dontayvion Wicks. Lemon fell to pick 20 despite being the top receiver on some boards. Wicks never got enough targets in Green Bay with all those mouths to feed.

On paper, the passing game looks fine. But Brown wasn’t just any receiver. He was the kind of big, physical target the Eagles built their offense around. Now they’ve got a bunch of smaller guys who are better at getting open than winning jump balls. That’s a problem for Jalen Hurts, who doesn’t have elite arm strength or pinpoint accuracy. He needs guys who can go up and get it.

The Eagles can still run the ball. Saquon Barkley is still there. The offensive line is still good. The tush push isn’t going anywhere. But there’s a real drop-off in physicality without Brown. That’s going to show up in third-and-long situations and in the red zone.

To be fair, the trade made sense. Getting a future first and fifth for a 29-year-old who wasn’t happy is good business. It’s just risky for a team that wants to win now.

Philadelphia will lean on the run game while Lemon gets up to speed and Smith adjusts to being the top target. The defense still has talent, especially up front, and they added Tariq Woolen in free agency. They’ll be in the mix for a Super Bowl. But if something holds them back, it’s going to be the way this receiving corps is built right now.
