Manchester United have made it clear to at least four clubs this summer: Mason Mount is not going anywhere. According to a report from TEAMtalk, Aston Villa, Fulham, and Newcastle all had enquiries knocked back. RB Leipzig checked in too. So did Inter Milan and Napoli. Every one of them got the same answer.
That’s a surprise if you’ve been tracking Mount’s time at Old Trafford. The guy cost £55 million back in 2023, has dealt with a brutal run of injuries, and has never really looked like the player Chelsea fans remember. But Michael Carrick sees something different. And he’s planning to use Mount in a way that might finally make that investment make sense.
Carrick’s Double Pivot Experiment
Mount spent most of his career as a No. 10 or out wide. Erik ten Hag wanted him as a central midfielder alongside Casemiro, and we all know how that turned out. But Carrick isn’t giving up on the idea. In United’s final game last season, a 3-0 win at Brighton, he paired Mount with Kobbie Mainoo in a double pivot. Mount played well. Like, really well. Good enough that Carrick reportedly sees a future for him in that deeper role.
TEAMtalk’s sources say Carrick values Mount’s intelligence, tactical flexibility, and work ethic. The guy is still popular in the dressing room too. None of that changes the fact that his first three years at United have been a mess of injuries and inconsistency. But if Carrick can unlock something consistent, suddenly United have an extra midfield option they didn’t know they had.
There’s also a practical angle here. United have missed on a few top midfield targets this summer. Elliot Anderson, Mateus Fernandes, Aurelien Tchouameni. None of them are walking through that door. So finding a solution from within makes sense, even if it’s partly by necessity.
The Price Tag Lingers
It’s impossible to look at the £55 million fee and Mount’s £250,000 weekly wages and call that deal anything but a mistake so far. But Carrick isn’t the guy who signed off on that. He’s the guy trying to salvage it. And if Mount carves out a role as a versatile piece who can play deep or push forward when needed, that’s not nothing. That’s a Swiss Army knife in a squad that could use one.
United are also closing in on two new midfielders. Andrey Santos is coming from Chelsea for £50 million. Youri Tielemans, reportedly a £35 million deal with Aston Villa, is close too. So Carrick will have options. Mount just might be one of them, just not in the way anyone expected when he showed up from Chelsea.
