Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso made one thing clear on Monday. He wants Enzo Fernandez to stay. And he didn’t leave much room for interpretation.
Fernandez spent much of last season surrounded by transfer noise. Real Madrid was the name that kept popping up. The Argentina midfielder even served a two-game suspension last season after publicly saying he’d like to live in Madrid someday. That comment didn’t sit well with Chelsea’s brass, but Alonso isn’t holding a grudge.
When asked if he’d had conversations with Fernandez about his future, Alonso kept it close to the vest. “We spoke, but what we spoke about remains private,” he said. Then came the follow-up. Does he actually want to keep him? Alonso’s response was a clipped but definitive: “Yeah.”
Real Madrid tried to kill the speculation earlier this month with a statement saying they had “no intention” to sign Fernandez. They added that the persistent rumors were spreading “information that does not correspond to reality” and causing “confusion among fans.” Fernandez is currently at the World Cup, so any deal would have to wait anyway. But Alonso seems content to let the whole thing die down.
Not every Chelsea player is getting that same vote of confidence.
Garnacho’s Exit Looks Close While Jackson Gets a Look
Alejandro Garnacho is not taking part in preseason training right now. That’s usually a tell. The winger’s camp is working on a move away from Stamford Bridge, and Alonso confirmed as much.
“We have spoken with the sporting directors and there is interest from him, from other clubs, so let’s see how it develops,” Alonso said. “Hopefully it finishes in the best possible way for all parties.”
That’s manager-speak for: he’s probably gone.
Nicolas Jackson’s situation is the opposite. He spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich and is now back in the fold. Alonso confirmed Jackson will join the team’s tour of Asia. “We’re looking forward to starting with Nico at that time,” he said. So Jackson gets a second chance to prove he belongs in Chelsea’s plans.
Three players, three different outcomes. Fernandez stays. Garnacho goes. Jackson gets a shot. For a club that’s been churning through rosters lately, that counts as stability.
