What Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama said about Luke Kornet’s block heard around the world

OKLAHOMA CITY — The San Antonio Spurs swarmed Luke Kornet after blocking Oklahoma City Thunder center Isaiah Hartenstein during a critical moment of Game 7, and Victor Wembanyama was too busy celebrating to notice. Ahead of his first NBA Finals appearance, Wembanyama reflected on the Spurs’ Game 7 moments. Hartenstein and the Thunder had trimmed their double-digit deficit to six and were on the verge of getting it down to four.

Kornet, blocking Hartenstein, halted the Thunder’s run, sealing a 111-103 win to advance to the Finals. Wembanyama discussed Kornet’s play of the night during his postgame media availability.

“I was proud of him. So happy. That’s the definition of a winning play,” Wembanyama said. “It’s whoever wanted it more.”

The Thunder couldn’t cut deeper into its six-point deficit before the Spurs put the finishing touches on a Game 7 win that ended the defending champions’ quest to win back-to-back titles. Luke Kornet finished with two points, four rebounds, and one very memorable block.

Spurs All-Star Victor Wembanyama put his all into this season, leading his team to their first NBA Finals appearance since 1999. Watching the game clock expire in the fourth quarter moved Wembanyama to tears in the final moments of Game 7.

After beating the defending-champion Thunder, Wembanyama reflected on his dedicated approach throughout the season.

“Really, you work, all of these hours you put in, is for these type of emotions,” Wembanyama said. “I want to win so bad, it’s like my life depends on it.”

The Spurs will host the Knicks in a 1999 Finals rematch on Wednesday.
