PSG Jump Into Fernandes Race — and Man United May Already Be Losing Ground

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly opened talks with West Ham over Mateus Fernandes, and Manchester United might need to rethink their summer midfield plans. According to French outlet Foot Mercato, the Champions League winners are now actively pursuing the 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder, who was expected to be United’s signature addition under new full-time manager Michael Carrick.

The Price Tag That Could Decide Everything

West Ham have slapped an £80 million valuation on Fernandes, who impressed last season despite the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League. The young playmaker proved he can handle the pace and physicality of English football, making him one of the most sought-after young midfielders on the market this summer.

United had identified him as a primary target alongside Brazilian international Ederson, whose move from Atalanta is all but finalized. But with PSG now in the picture — and armed with the allure of playing for the reigning European champions — United’s path to Fernandes looks significantly harder.

Two Problems for INEOS

First, the money. United will have to match or exceed that £80 million asking price, and with the club still navigating Financial Fair Play restrictions, that’s no small ask. PSG have deeper pockets and less incentive to haggle.

Second, the timing. United have reportedly cooled their interest in Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, and Manchester City appear to be winning the race for Elliot Anderson. That leaves Fernandes as arguably the most realistic marquee midfield option still available — and PSG’s interest makes it a race United can’t afford to lose if they want to upgrade the engine room.

Foot Mercato reports that both clubs are expected to try negotiating down West Ham’s initial asking price, but PSG have already initiated direct contact. United have not publicly confirmed their interest, though multiple outlets have linked them to Fernandes for weeks.

What’s at Stake for Carrick

Carrick took over permanently after a strong second half of last season, proving United can compete with the Premier League’s best. But the squad still lacks depth in midfield, particularly after the departures of several fringe players. Adding Fernandes would give Carrick a creative, energetic presence to pair with the more defensive-minded Ederson.

Missing out, however, would leave United scrambling for alternatives at a time when top midfield talent is flying off the board. PSG’s involvement doesn’t guarantee they’ll land Fernandes, but it does mean United can’t afford to stall. The next few weeks will tell whether INEOS is willing to pay the premium — or watch another primary target slip away.
