Harry Wilson is going to Leeds United. Not Manchester United. Not Tottenham. Not Aston Villa. Leeds.
The Wales international, who just finished a monster season at Fulham with 10 goals and 7 assists in 36 Premier League appearances, will become a free agent when his contract expires at the end of this month. And Leeds jumped the line to get him.
David Ornstein confirmed the deal on Tuesday. Wilson will undergo a medical in the coming days and sign a long-term contract with a significant pay bump. The 29-year-old can play as an attacking midfielder or out wide, which gives Leeds some real flexibility in the final third.
A blow to Manchester United’s midfield plans
United had been poking around Wilson for a while. They’re looking to add at least one midfielder this summer — maybe two or three, depending on what happens with Manuel Ugarte. They already wrapped up a deal for Atalanta’s Ederson, but he won’t officially join until after the World Cup. That leaves room for more.
But Wilson was one of the names on the list. A cheap option, versatile, Premier League proven. Now he’s off the board and headed to Old Trafford’s historical rival instead.
It’s not the first time these two clubs have tangled this window. They’ve also been battling over Southampton’s Shea Charles. So yeah, the rivalry is heating up again, and it’s not even July.
Other midfield targets still in play
United’s list isn’t empty. They’re still working on Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, though that £85 million asking price is a problem. Adam Wharton at Crystal Palace and Brighton’s Carlos Baleba are also on the radar. But none of those deals are close yet.
For Leeds, this feels like a statement. They beat out multiple Premier League clubs for a guy who just put up top-tier numbers on a midtable team. That’s not nothing.
Wilson will sign his deal, do his medical, and start working on what comes next. For United, it’s back to the drawing board — or hopefully a plan they already had ready.
