Leeds United have been chasing Harry Wilson for over a year. Now they’ve finally got him.
The Wales international has agreed to join the club on a free transfer after his contract at Fulham expired, and the deal is done. Multiple outlets confirmed the news on Wednesday, with the 29-year-old set to undergo a medical in the coming days.
This wasn’t a quick decision. Leeds tried to bring Wilson in last summer, but then-Fulham boss Marco Silva blocked the move. They circled back in January and came up empty again. But once Silva’s exit was confirmed and Wilson made it clear he wanted out, the path opened up.
Big Money Deal
The contract structure is notable. According to sources, Wilson will sign a three-year deal with a club option for a fourth year. His weekly wages will jump from the £55,000 he was making at Craven Cottage to somewhere in the neighborhood of £90,000. That would put him level with Dominic Calvert-Lewin as the highest paid player at Elland Road.
He’s also getting a significant signing-on fee. Leeds had to outbid a crowded field including Benfica, Aston Villa and Everton. Benfica were especially interesting since Silva now manages them.
What Wilson Brings
Wilson is coming off a career year. He scored 10 goals and added seven assists across 36 appearances for Fulham last season. For a winger who turns 30 during the upcoming campaign, that’s production the Leeds attack desperately needs.
The Wales international has Premier League experience, international pedigree, and a left foot that can cause problems from set pieces. He’s not the flashiest name on the market but he’s consistent and proven in English football.
More Moves Coming?
Leeds might not be done. Reports indicate the club has also held talks with Julian Brandt, the German playmaker who is a free agent after leaving Borussia Dortmund. Brandt would be another high-profile addition if the 49ers Enterprises ownership group can get that one over the line.
Wilson is expected to travel to West Yorkshire in the next day or two. If the medical goes smoothly, he could be officially introduced before the weekend. After a year of trying, Leeds finally got their guy.
