AEW Champion Thekla Picked Messi Over Ronaldo and Refused to Elaborate

AEW Women’s World Champion Thekla sat down for an exclusive interview during the World Cup and ended up shutting down one of soccer’s most tired arguments. Her verdict on the Messi vs. Ronaldo GOAT debate? One word. No follow-up. Just “Messi.”

The Austrian wrestler didn’t offer any explanation or caveats. She didn’t break down stats or trophies. She just picked a side and moved on. It’s the kind of answer that probably drives debates on Twitter insane but honestly, it’s refreshing.

Thekla was originally asked about Argentina’s 2-0 win over her home country Austria. Lionel Messi had a strong showing in that match, following up a hat-trick in Argentina’s opener with another standout performance. Thekla’s initial reaction was blunt and profane, but she quickly clarified that she respects Messi as a player. “No, obviously, Messi is a phenomenal football player,” she said. “But yeah, it’s not over yet. It’s not over until it’s over, so go, Austria.”

It’s worth noting Thekla is from a soccer country herself. Austria may not be Brazil or Germany, but they take the sport seriously. Seeing your national team get handled by Messi and company probably stings a little more when you grew up with the game.

As for Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal started the tournament with a flat performance against DR Congo but bounced back with a 5-0 win over Uzbekistan. Both Portugal and Argentina still have one group game left, so the GOAT debate isn’t going anywhere. But Thekla already made up her mind.

Meanwhile, the 33-year-old champion has bigger things to worry about than soccer arguments. She’s scheduled to defend her AEW Women’s World Championship against Starlight Kid at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door on June 28, 2026. That’s a real fight. The Messi vs. Ronaldo thing is just for the fans to argue about on their lunch breaks.
