Leeds United’s search for a new goalkeeper just got a little more complicated. Valencia has reportedly reached an agreement on personal terms with Kayne van Oevelen, the 22-year-old FC Volendam shot-stopper who’s been on the Whites’ radar this summer.
The 6-foot-6 Dutch keeper is coming off a promising season in the Eredivisie, where he posted three clean sheets in 32 appearances. But here’s the thing — he’s not the only name on Leeds’ list. Not by a long shot.
The Goalkeeper Carousel at Elland Road
Daniel Farke is basically rebuilding his goalkeeping room from scratch. Illan Meslier left when his contract expired, signing with Arsenal. Karl Darlow’s deal also ran out, and Manchester United is closing in on him. Lucas Perri, who arrived last summer and became the starter, hasn’t fully convinced anyone and could be sold if the right offer comes in.
So yeah, Leeds needs bodies. The club already had a bid rejected for Zion Suzuki and is preparing another offer. Nick Pope’s name has come up too. Van Oevelen emerged as a more recent option after his performances caught the eye in the Netherlands.
Valencia Has the Edge, But Money Talks
According to Spanish outlet Tribuna Deportiva, Van Oevelen wants the Valencia move and personal terms are already settled. That’s a real advantage for Los Che. But there’s a catch — they still need to agree on a transfer fee with Volendam. And the competition isn’t just Leeds. Feyenoord and Ipswich Town are also sniffing around.
Van Oevelen missed Volendam’s relegation playoffs through injury as the club dropped into the Eerste Divisie. That setback has made the club more willing to let him go. If Leeds really want him, they can probably offer a better financial package than Valencia. But right now, the player’s preference seems clear.
This isn’t the first time Leeds and Valencia have crossed paths this summer. They’re also tangled up over winger Largie Ramazani, who Valencia wants to keep after his loan spell ended.
The whole situation feels like it could drag. Leeds has options, but Valencia has the player’s word. We’ll see if that’s enough to get the deal done — or if the promise of Premier League money at Elland Road changes Van Oevelen’s mind.
