Al-Ahli Makes Late Push to Steal Mason Greenwood From Fenerbahce. Manchester United Cashes In Either Way

Mason Greenwood’s summer tour is taking another detour. The former Manchester United forward, who just finished a monster season at Marseille with 26 goals and 11 assists across all competitions, was all but packed for Istanbul. Fenerbahce had an agreement in principle with the Ligue 1 club for around €40 million. Verbal terms on a contract through 2030 were reportedly in place. The deal felt done.

Then Al-Ahli called.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, the Saudi Pro League side made a move on Sunday to hijack the transfer. Al-Ahli manager Matthias Jaissle spoke directly to Greenwood to sell him on the project. The club is ready to move if the player gives any real encouragement. For now though, Fenerbahce remains the favorite to get it done.

This is good news for Manchester United. And it’s not because they want Greenwood back. They don’t.

The Sell-On Clause That Changes Everything

United negotiated a roughly 50 percent sell-on clause when Greenwood left for Marseille permanently in 2024. They also have matching rights. But here’s the thing the club made clear two years ago and has not budged on: Greenwood has no future at Old Trafford. Period. Jacobs notes that the matching rights clause was never even considered for activation. Any Premier League return rumors, including the brief Tottenham chatter, were shut down fast.

So United won’t be bringing him home. But they will be cashing a very large check. And if Al-Ahli and Fenerbahce end up bidding against each other, that check gets even bigger. INEOS is planning a heavy spending summer and any extra cash from Greenwood’s departure goes straight into the squad budget.

Greenwood’s career arc has been wild. He came up through United’s academy looking like the next superstar out of Carrington. Then off-field problems ended his time at Old Trafford abruptly. A loan at Getafe got him back on the pitch. A permanent move to Marseille in 2024 gave him a fresh start. And now, after a season that reminded everyone of his talent, he’s the center of a two-team tug-of-war between Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Fenerbahce wants to close the deal fast before Al-Ahli gains traction. The Turkish club has been working this transfer for weeks and doesn’t want to lose it at the finish line. But Al-Ahli has the money and a direct line to Greenwood’s camp now. Jacobs says the Saudi side has already spoken to the player’s representatives to gauge whether a move is actually possible.

Marseille is happy either way. They get their fee. United is happy either way. They get their cut. Greenwood gets to pick his next chapter. For now Fenerbahce is still the frontrunner, but this thing isn’t locked up yet.
