Lisandro Martinez might be on the move this summer. According to reports from Chiringuito TV, the Argentine defender has been offered to Atletico Madrid, and the Spanish club is listening.
It’s not hard to see why. Martinez is currently at the World Cup with Argentina, but back at Manchester United, his status is more complicated than his reputation as a fan favorite would suggest.
The injury and discipline problem
Martinez is beloved at Old Trafford for his aggressive defending and ability to build play from the back. But his time in England has been interrupted by injuries and moments where his temper got the better of him. Those red cards and lengthy spells on the sideline matter. INEOS is taking notice.
The club had considered moving the World Cup winner into a defensive midfield role to protect him and make use of his passing range. That experiment never really got off the ground. So now, with his contract running until 2027 (plus a club option for another year), United has a decision to make.
They haven’t started contract talks yet. That’s telling. They plan to trigger the extension to avoid losing him for nothing next summer, but that’s a holding move, not a commitment.
What Atletico brings to the table
Diego Simeone is an Argentine legend, and playing under him in La Liga would be a real draw for Martinez. Atletico needs defensive help, and Martinez fits their style — tough, no-nonsense, comfortable under pressure. His current market value is around £34 million. If Atletico offers that, it’s going to be hard for United to say no.
United needs to sell players to balance the books. They’ve already spent on Andrey Santos, Karl Darlow, and Youri Tielemans this window, with more moves likely. A left-back, a left-winger, and a backup striker are all on the shopping list. Sales have to fund some of that.
And there’s Ayden Heaven, the young defender who’s been waiting for consistent minutes. If Martinez leaves, the path opens for him.
No formal offer has arrived at United’s desk yet. What we’re seeing is intermediaries testing the water. That can change fast in July, but for now, it’s a story worth watching. Martinez is a fan favorite, but in football, sentiment only goes so far. And with United’s need to sell and Martinez’s injury history, this one could move quickly.
