Manchester United’s midfield rebuild was supposed to be about stars. Big names. The kind of signings that make rival fans jealous and season-ticket holders feel like the club is finally back on track. Instead, the club is in advanced talks with Aston Villa for Youri Tielemans, and not everyone is thrilled.
Gary Pallister, who won four Premier League titles with United, didn’t hold back when asked about the move. In an interview with The Peoples Person, the former center-back called it underwhelming. He’s not exactly the only one feeling that way.
They missed on Tonali and Anderson
Pallister pointed out that United had been linked with Newcastle’s Elliot Anderson and AC Milan’s Sandro Tonali, who he said has the Manchester United stamp all over him. Anderson has been turning heads at the World Cup, playing like a hungry ball-winner who could have anchored this midfield for years. Tonali is the kind of player who feels like he belongs in a red shirt.
But both slipped through the net. Now United are turning to Tielemans, and Pallister summed up the feeling pretty bluntly: “He’s an exciting talent, but do I think he’s right out the top drawer? Probably not.”
A low-risk move or a sign of the times
Tielemans can produce moments of magic. He’s got a wand of a right foot and he can get fans out of their seats. But after losing Casemiro and seeing Manuel Ugarte go down with an ACL injury during the World Cup, United need more than occasional brilliance. They need a midfield that can compete for titles, not just hold the line.
Pallister wondered if the club’s financial situation is playing a role here, whether it’s about wage structure or FFP restrictions. “I don’t think the signings we mentioned so far have blown Man United fans away,” he said. And he’s probably right.
Nobody is calling Tielemans a bad player. But when a club like United goes from chasing Tonali to signing a guy who was available on a free transfer a couple years ago, it feels like they’re aiming lower than they should be. Pallister called it “not the marquee signing” fans are looking for. That stings because it’s true.
The second part of Pallister’s interview drops tomorrow. It’ll be interesting to hear if he has any names in mind that would actually get him excited.
