Roma Manager Hints Manu Kone Sale May Be Necessary for Financial Fair Play

Manchester United’s search for midfield help has taken another turn. Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini just admitted the club might need to sell Manu Kone. That is exactly the kind of opening United needed to hear.

United have been scrambling after missing out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes. Anderson went to Manchester City. Fernandes chose Tottenham. Then the Ederson deal collapsed last month after Atalanta claimed he passed their medical just fine, even though United said he failed his. Atalanta is reportedly considering offering Ederson a new contract now.

Andrey Santos is expected to be announced soon from Chelsea. But the club wants at least one more midfielder. Possibly two. Kone has become a top target over the last week.

Why Kone makes sense

Kone is 25, strong, aggressive, and technically sound. He turned heads at the World Cup for France. That 2-0 win over Morocco where he basically controlled the midfield? That was the game that got scouts talking. He helped France get past Morocco and into the semifinals against Spain.

According to reports, Roma wants around £47 million for him. That is not cheap, but United is considering making an offer. Liverpool is also in the mix, which complicates things.

Gasperini’s honest take

Gasperini did not sugarcoat it. He told reporters Kone played well in the first half of the season but looked sluggish after that. He pointed to the World Cup as where Kone really showed his quality and earned a starting spot for France.

Then came the part United wanted to hear. Gasperini said, “Will he stay? I think these Financial Fair Play conditions vary from team to team. They’re not precise.” He went on: “It’s undeniable that Roma knew they needed to balance their books. I hope that reaching the Champions League will be enough. But it’s clear that balance sheets are crucial for clubs. There will be more clarity in the coming weeks.”

That sounds like a manager preparing for a sale. Roma made the Champions League, but that might not be enough to fix the books. Kone is one of their most salable assets.

What happens next

Kone played 29 Serie A matches last season. Two goals. Three assists. Not flashy numbers, but his work is more about disrupting plays and keeping possession. United has a few weeks left in the window to get this done. Liverpool breathing down their neck means they cannot drag their feet.

Roma might hold out for £47 million. They might take less if nobody meets that price. Either way, Gasperini basically told the world that money talks. United just has to decide how badly they want the deal.
