Dak Prescott Just Jumped in ESPN’s QB Rankings. The Gap Behind Him Is Telling.

Dak Prescott didn’t play a snap in the postseason this year. The Cowboys stayed home. But when ESPN polled league insiders for their latest quarterback rankings, the guy landed higher than he has in years.

Jeremy Fowler broke down the voting. Prescott appeared on nearly 75 percent of ballots and drew a healthy number of top-five votes. More telling? There was a clear gap between Prescott and the guy ranked seventh. Fowler called it “long overdue” for a quarterback who’d been stuck as a fringe top-10 name on these lists.

That’s the interesting part. Prescott has been weirdly inconsistent by season. 2022 was rough. Injuries piled up. Turnovers got ugly. 2023 was great. 2024 fell apart again. Then 2025 was a bounce-back year where he stayed healthy and played well. So 2026 becomes the swing season. Which version shows up?

What NFL Coordinators Are Saying

ESPN’s list came with anonymous coordinator quotes. One called Prescott a true, acute progression passer. Not just a guy who can throw it deep. Someone who reads defenses and works through reads. Another coordinator flat out said Prescott has the ability to throw for 5,000 yards in a season.

That’s not small talk. Coordinators don’t usually hand out that kind of praise to quarterbacks they don’t actually believe in.

The Weapons Around Him

CeeDee Lamb is still the headliner. But Lamb dealt with his own injuries last season, and the offense didn’t crater. That’s partly because George Pickens came over and Jake Ferguson kept developing at tight end. When Lamb was banged up, those two carried the load.

Now the Cowboys have all three healthy at the same time. That’s not nothing. Prescott’s supporting cast is probably the best it’s been since the 2021 group. The line is decent. The run game is a question mark, but the passing attack has the pieces to be one of the league’s better units.

Health is the variable. Prescott stayed upright last season. Lamb didn’t. If everyone stays on the field together, this offense could look dangerous. Prescott climbed the rankings for a reason. Now he has to prove he can stay there.
