Atletico Madrid’s Opener for Manu Kone Got Rejected. United Might Want to Move Fast.

Manu Kone is suddenly the central figure in Manchester United’s long, messy search for a midfielder. The club has spent months chasing names. Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Aurelien Tchouameni all got away for one reason or another. Tchouameni’s decision to stay at Real Madrid and sign a new deal was a clear blow. But it also pushed INEOS toward a different target: Kone.

And here’s the thing. Kone might actually be a better fit. That’s not just talk. At the World Cup, his performances for France made it so nobody really missed Tchouameni. Kone controls tempo, shields the ball under pressure and sprays passes out to teammates without a second thought. He can slow a game down or speed it up depending on what’s needed. That kind of versatility is exactly what United’s midfield has lacked.

Roma set a price. Atletico tested it.

Roma has been clear, according to reports out of Italy. They want around £60 million for the 25-year-old. That’s not pocket change, but it’s also not outrageous for a midfielder playing at this level. Personal terms with Kone reportedly aren’t expected to be a problem, which simplifies things on United’s side.

But they don’t have all the time in the world. Atletico Madrid already made an opening bid of roughly £40 million, according to Corriere dello Sport. Roma shot it down quickly. The line from the club? Forty million euros is too little. They’re holding firm at 60 million euros, no less.

Atletico’s offer was rejected, but that doesn’t mean they’re done. They showed they’re willing to negotiate. And if United waits too long, a bidding war could break out quickly. A midfielder of Kone’s caliber, with his World Cup performances still fresh, isn’t going to sit on the market forever.

United needs to decide soon

INEOS has been deliberate since taking over football operations at Old Trafford, but deliberate can turn into slow if you’re not careful. The club has already missed out on several targets this summer. Letting another slip away because they waited for the perfect moment would be a real problem.

Kone isn’t just a stopgap. He’s the kind of player who could anchor the midfield for years. His ability to receive the ball under pressure and keep possession moving is a skill set United has badly needed. He doesn’t panic. He doesn’t force passes. He just plays smart, consistent football.

Roma isn’t actively pushing to sell, but they’re not shutting the door either. They know they have a player whose stock is rising fast. If United wants to beat the competition and avoid a full-scale bidding war, they need to act before Atletico — or someone else — gets serious.

The World Cup isn’t over. Kone keeps producing. That means the price isn’t going down.
