Vegas Golden Knights Cut Ties With Carter Hart — What’s Behind the Sudden Move

The Vegas Golden Knights are just days away from dropping the puck on the Stanley Cup Final, and you’d think all eyes would be on their stunning sweep of the Colorado Avalanche. Think again. A tense moment during Monday’s media day has suddenly shifted the spotlight onto something far more uncomfortable – and it involves their controversial goaltender, Carter Hart.

According to sources close to the situation, what was supposed to be a routine pre-Final interview turned awkward – and then explosive – when a reporter from The Athletic dared to ask Hart about his highly publicized sexual assault trial. Hart, who was found not guilty in the Hockey Canada case, has been with the Golden Knights since mid-season, but that hasn’t stopped the questions from following him.

Sean Gentile of The Athletic pressed Hart on what he meant back in October when he spoke about ‘learning and growth’ after the verdict, and whether that growth has continued. Hart’s answer was measured but vague: “I’ve learned a lot. I’ve grown a lot since then. And I’ve been able to meet a lot of good people in the community. The Vegas Golden Knights Foundation has done a really good job of making it easy for me to integrate…”

But before he could finish that thought – before any follow-up could land – a team staffer reportedly swooped in and shut down the entire availability. No warning. No explanation. Just an abrupt end to a question some insiders are calling ‘the one they didn’t want answered.’

This isn’t the first time the Golden Knights have clamped down on Hart-related inquiries. Back in October, before his signing was even official, the team booted The Athletic’s Mark Lazerus out of a press conference for simply asking about the goalie’s legal situation. That pattern of behavior has fans and media alike wondering: What exactly is Vegas trying to protect?

Hart is one of five defendants in the Hockey Canada case who were cleared to play in the NHL, but he’s the only one back on the big stage. Michael McLeod, also a defendant, spent this season in the AHL with the Hurricanes’ affiliate. While Hart has faced relentless scrutiny this season, his playoff performance has been nothing short of stellar – which only adds fuel to the firestorm.

One league insider, speaking on condition of anonymity, told us: “The NHL is watching this very carefully. If the Golden Knights win the Cup, that press conference shutdown is going to be the story. You can’t silence the narrative forever.”

As Game 1 against the Carolina Hurricanes approaches, the question hanging over T-Mobile Arena isn’t just about who’ll lift the trophy – it’s about whether the Golden Knights can control the story off the ice as well as they control the puck on it.
