Connor Hellebuyck’s Frustration With Jets Could Force Winnipeg Into Its Toughest Trade Yet

For the first time in years, the Winnipeg Jets are facing the very real possibility that their franchise goaltender wants out. Connor Hellebuyck, a two-time Vezina Trophy winner and the backbone of the organization since his arrival, has become the center of trade speculation after a disastrous 2025-26 season that saw the Jets go from Presidents’ Trophy winners to missing the playoffs entirely.

What Sparked the Rumors?

Hellebuyck’s post-season comments raised eyebrows around the league. While he didn’t explicitly demand a trade, the veteran netminder made clear he wants to win a Stanley Cup — and questions are mounting about whether that can happen in Winnipeg. According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, teams began reaching out to the Jets last month after those remarks circulated.

“Teams had been calling the Winnipeg Jets about goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who has a full no-movement clause, after his season-ended remarks sparked speculation over his future with the club,” Pagnotta reported. “Hellebuyck, 33, is entering the third season of a seven-year, $59.5 million contract, and it is clear he wants to chase a Stanley Cup. He wanted to do so with the Jets, but after a rough season for everyone, his tune started to change.”

The Trade Request Reports

Speculation intensified earlier this week when former NHL forward Matt Murley claimed on the “Game Notes” podcast that Hellebuyck had indeed requested a trade. Pagnotta noted that while he could not independently verify that report, the possibility of a change of scenery has been discussed around the league for some time.

“While we’ve not been able to confirm that information, the talk even last month suggested it is something he might be open to, for the right environment,” Pagnotta added.

One team already linked to the star goaltender is the Florida Panthers. Pagnotta reported that Florida checked in on Hellebuyck last month, and Murley suggested the reigning Stanley Cup contenders remain interested if the situation escalates.

What This Means for Winnipeg

The Jets have maintained that they are not actively shopping Hellebuyck and have no desire to move him. But if he wants out, Winnipeg will be forced into one of the toughest decisions in franchise history. With a full no-movement clause, Hellebuyck controls his own fate, which means the Jets can’t simply trade him to the highest bidder — they’ll have to find a destination he approves of.

At 33, Hellebuyck remains one of the league’s elite goaltenders. Losing him would be a devastating blow to a team already reeling from a lost season. But if the frustration has reached a breaking point, the Jets may eventually have to weigh loyalty against the reality of a star player who sees his championship window closing in Manitoba.

For now, the speculation continues to grow. And in the NHL rumor mill, that kind of smoke often leads to fire.
