Chad Johnson Tried to Sell LeBron on Miami and It Got Real Awkward Fast

LeBron James hasn’t said where he’s going next. Rich Paul probably knows. The rest of us are guessing.

On a recent episode of Nightcap, Chad Johnson decided he wasn’t going to just guess. He was going to pitch. Johnson, who played for the Miami Heat’s football cousin down the road, laid out why LeBron should come back to South Beach. And he didn’t hold back on the other options.

“His next move has to be his best move,” Johnson said. “Look at the landscape of the NBA right now. What is the best thing for LeBron to do? Do I want to go play in the West? Absolutely not.”

He went team by team. Golden State? Looks good on paper. LeBron loves playing with Steph Curry. But then Johnson pointed out the problem — you’d have to deal with Denver, San Antonio and Victor Wembanyama. That’s a lot of juggernauts for a guy closing in on 40.

The East isn’t much better according to Johnson

Philadelphia got a mention. But Johnson wasn’t buying it. “You got Maxey and Jaylen Brown. You got Embiid, sort of clogging up the hole a little bit. He in the way. That don’t make no sense.”

Then he turned his attention to the Heat. “Down here, the 305, in the county, we already been. Why not bring another trip down here? You could facilitate. You can dictate.”

It’s not the first time someone has floated Miami as a landing spot. The Heat have the culture, the front office and a track record of getting the most out of aging superstars. Pat Riley doesn’t rebuild. He reloads. And the idea of LeBron running point with Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo is the kind of thing that keeps rival executives up at night.

But there are complications. Miami’s cap situation isn’t exactly flexible. And LeBron has already done the Miami thing. He won two titles there. He left. The question is whether going back would feel like a victory lap or a step backward.

Other teams have their own arguments. The Knicks have cap space and a city that would build a statue before he signs. The Sixers can offer max money and Embiid — though Johnson clearly sees that as a minus. Even a return to Cleveland gets mentioned, mostly because the narrative would be too perfect to ignore.

LeBron hasn’t tipped his hand. Nobody expects him to do it soon either. He usually lets the market breathe, watches a few teams make moves and then drops his decision right before training camp. That’s how he’s always done it.

So for now, the speculation continues. Chad Johnson made his case. Miami fans loved it. Everyone else will just have to wait.
