Austin Reaves Gave Up $5 Million So the Lakers Could Keep Breathing

Austin Reaves is about to make $180 million over four years, and apparently he still plans to drive whatever he was driving before. No new fleet of Rolls-Royces. No jewelry chests. The guy told the California Post he’s basically letting his financial advisors handle the investing part while he keeps living like a normal person who happens to be an NBA guard.

He mentioned a SpaceX investment he got into a few years ago. “I don’t really know much about it,” he said. “I just let my financial advisors handle it, and hopefully, they make me some money.” Honest. Understated. Completely on brand for a guy who went undrafted and turned the Lakers into believers through sheer hustle.

Reaves Gave the Lakers Room to Breathe

But the real story here isn’t about space stocks or personal restraint. It’s about what Reaves did with his contract number. According to Jovan Buha of ClutchPoints, the final deal is $180 million over four years with a player option in 2029-30. That’s $5 million less than the $185 million max he could have demanded.

He took a haircut willingly. The front office needed it. Post-LeBron James, post-everything that made last summer a mess, they needed to keep some cap flexibility under the luxury tax apron. Reaves gave it to them without being asked, reportedly, and without making it a whole production.

The Lakers GM Rob Pelinka put out a statement on X calling Reaves a foundational piece. He talked about selflessness and work ethic. Normally those statements feel like HR talking points. This one landed differently because Reaves actually did something to back it up.

The Luka Doncic Partnership Is Now Locked In

Reaves is now locked in alongside Luka Doncic as the backcourt for the foreseeable future. Two guys who can handle the ball, make plays, and keep defenses scrambling. The Lakers have a real identity again after losing LeBron. It’s not the same kind of star power, but it’s something coherent.

Reaves could have taken the full max. Plenty of players would have. He chose not to. That kind of move doesn’t win championships on its own, but it keeps the door open for the front office to make another move down the line. And in a league where the second apron closes windows fast, a little room goes a long way.
