John Stones spent most of his final season at Manchester City insisting he was healthy enough to play. A new report from Sam Lee at The Athletic makes it clear that Pep Guardiola simply didn’t believe him anymore.
The 32-year-old defender left City as a free agent this summer, ending a ten-year run that included six Premier League titles and a Champions League. But the way it ended left a lot of people around the club confused and, in some cases, frustrated on Stones’ behalf.
Guardiola wanted Stones to push harder
According to sources close to the situation, Guardiola lost faith in Stones’ ability to stay on the field. The disconnect came down to a fundamental difference in philosophy. Guardiola prefers players who grind through discomfort to be available. Stones, at times, took a more cautious approach to managing his body.
Ironically, people at City’s training ground actually thought Stones looked good in the final months of the season. His recovery work had impressed staff. But by then, the damage to the relationship was already done.
The breaking point came in late March. City had a Carabao Cup final against Arsenal. Ruben Dias was injured. Marc Guehi was cup-tied. The natural path seemed obvious. Start Stones. Instead, Guardiola left him out entirely. Sources told The Athletic that decision stuck with Stones and shaped everything that followed.
Stones himself hinted at the frustration while talking to reporters before the World Cup this summer. He felt like his late-season contributions didn’t get the recognition they deserved, especially given the shape he had worked to get into.
Late cameo against Crystal Palace added to the confusion
The confusion didn’t stop there. In a home game against Crystal Palace in May, Stones only got on the field very late in the match. Multiple people inside the squad thought that was odd. He had been training well. He looked fit. But the manager saw it differently.
Those close to the situation describe a relationship that had simply run its course. Guardiola is leaving City this summer too. Director of football Hugo Viana is already reshaping the squad for incoming manager Enzo Maresca. Stones was part of the old guard that needed to be moved on from, even if the timing felt awkward.
Viana has been prioritizing finding a long-term replacement for Stones at center-back. The midfield has already been addressed with the arrival of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. The defensive rebuild is next on the list.
Stones is currently at the World Cup with England as a free agent. Thomas Tuchel still trusts him. And there’s already interest from Italian clubs who see an experienced ball-playing defender available on a free transfer. Whether he signs somewhere during the tournament or waits until after, the way his ten years at City ended deserved better than a series of bewildering benchings and a skipped contract renewal.
