Wyndham Clark Went From Meltdown to US Open Glory and His Message Says Everything

Wyndham Clark just did something that felt impossible a year ago. He won the US Open for the second time, holding off Sam Burns by one shot at Shinnecock Hills. And he did it with a crowd that was mostly rooting against him.

Clark posted a long message on X after the win. It wasn’t the usual trophy-tweet stuff. He got real about how bad things had gotten.

“I’m not sure I’ve found the words yet,” Clark wrote. “If I’m being honest, last year wasn’t filled with many highs. There were a lot more questions than answers, a lot more frustration than celebration, and plenty of moments that tested my belief in myself. This game can be incredibly humbling. It doesn’t owe you anything, and sometimes the only thing you can do is keep showing up and trust that the work will eventually pay off. That’s why this week means so much.”

You remember the low point, right? The 2025 US Open at Oakmont. Clark missed the cut and then destroyed a locker in the clubhouse. The video went viral. Golf fans turned on him fast. He went from US Open champion to the guy who loses his mind and breaks stuff.

He didn’t make the cut in three of the four majors in 2024. Finished T-56 at the US Open that year. Then T-46 at the 2025 Masters and T-50 at the 2025 PGA. Then the Oakmont thing. It was a brutal stretch for a guy who had just won a major.

This year at Shinnecock, the crowd wasn’t exactly warm. New York golf fans are a different breed. They’re loud and they pick sides. Clark was not their guy. But he played wire-to-wire anyway and walked away with the trophy.

Thanking the people who stuck around

Clark made a point to thank the fans even if they weren’t pulling for him. He also shouted out the USGA and everyone at Shinnecock. But the part that felt most honest was him acknowledging the people who stayed in his corner when things were ugly.

“To my team, family, friends, and sponsors, thank you for staying in my corner through the difficult stretches. Thank you for believing in me on the days when believing wasn’t easy,” he said.

He closed the message with a line about the road back. “This trophy means more because of the road it took to get here. The setbacks, the doubts, and the hard days all make this moment that much sweeter.”

Clark has already won twice this year. He took the Byron Nelson in May. Now the Open Championship is next at Royal Birkdale. He finished T-4 there last year, so the momentum is real.

Funny how fast things can flip in golf. One year you’re breaking lockers and the next you’re a two-time US Open champion with a crowd that still doesn’t like you but has to respect what you just did.
