Tottenham Just Dropped £230M This Summer and Sandro Tonali Is Next Through the Door

Sandro Tonali landed in London today and is headed to Hotspur Way for a medical tomorrow. The Italian midfielder is joining Tottenham from Newcastle in a deal that could hit £100 million. That is not a typo.

This comes just 24 hours after Spurs agreed an £85 million fee with West Ham for Mateus Fernandes. The Portugal midfielder already passed his medical. Both players have signed six-year contracts. Combined, those two moves alone cost £185 million. And Tottenham is not done yet.

The spending spree that won’t slow down

Roberto De Zerbi has been busy. Before Tonali and Fernandes, Spurs already brought in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke and Martin Dubravka. That is six signings in just over two weeks of the transfer window. The total guaranteed outlay so far is £230 million. That is a lot of money even by Premier League standards.

But the club is still looking at more targets. Standard Sport understands Tottenham still has interest in Manchester City winger Savinho. They tried to sign him last summer and failed. He could be available for less than the £70 million City wanted back then.

There is also long-standing interest in City goalkeeper James Trafford. But after Dubravka arrived and Antonin Kinsky signed a new deal, a move for Trafford seems unlikely right now.

Outgoings and denials

With all these new faces coming in, some players have to leave. Luka Vuskovic is expected to go to Brighton for £50 million. There will probably be more departures too. But Spurs have strongly denied reports that they received a bid for Archie Gray.

Tonali flew in from Milan this morning and is expected at the training ground Thursday afternoon. He and Fernandes become De Zerbi’s fifth and sixth summer additions, and they join a squad that looks very different than it did a month ago.

How much more can Tottenham spend? The answer seems to be: quite a bit. Savinho is still a target, and if the price drops enough, Spurs might push for him. For now, the focus is on getting Tonali through his medical and officially announced. But this window is far from over.
