Senegal’s Ismaila Sarr Just Put Belgium on World Cup Elimination Watch

Belgium came into this World Cup knockout match hoping the group stage was just a bad dream. Two draws against Egypt and Iran followed by a blowout win over New Zealand wasn’t exactly the kind of form that strikes fear into opponents. But Round of 32 games are supposed to be resets. Fresh starts. A chance for the big names to show up.

Senegal clearly didn’t read that script.

From the opening whistle in Seattle, the Lions of Teranga dictated the tempo and made Belgium look slow. Lost. Like a team that forgot how to play together somewhere between the flight over and the tunnel walkout.

Sarr steals the show early

The first real statement came in the 24th minute. Sadio Mané floated a cross toward the back post and Ismaila Sarr did what he does — attacked it with authority. His header banged off the far post, but the rebound fell perfectly for Habib Diarra to tap in. 1-0 Senegal. The stadium woke up.

Belgium tried to adjust at halftime. Romelu Lukaku came on. You could feel the plan shift. Get the ball forward. Use his size. Muscle one back and steal momentum.

It didn’t work.

A goal that belonged on a highlight reel

Six minutes into the second half, Senegal killed the game. Moussa Niakhaté launched a long ball from deep in his own half and Sarr read it before anyone else. He slipped behind the Belgian defense like they were standing still. The ball dropped over his shoulder and he killed it dead with one touch on his chest. The second touch was a right-footed volley that tore past Thibaut Courtois before the keeper could even react.

Two touches. One goal. Belgium’s World Cup on life support.

Kevin De Bruyne stood there with that blank stare players get when they know the moment is slipping away. Courtois picked the ball out of the net for the second time and you could see the frustration building. Senegal’s bench erupted. The fans — mostly wearing green and yellow — drowned out whatever sound the Belgian supporters could make.

Senegal held firm the rest of the way. Sarr kept running at defenders. Mané kept drawing fouls in dangerous spots. Belgium never found an answer. The match — and maybe their tournament — ended with Senegal celebrating a statement win on American soil.
