Is Craig Breslow’s Job Security the Real Wild Card for Red Sox at the Trade Deadline?

Is Craig Breslow’s Job Security the Real Wild Card for Red Sox at the Trade Deadline?

The Boston Red Sox have a problem. It’s not just the 37-48 record or the last-place spot in the AL East. It’s the guy running baseball operations, Craig Breslow, and whether he’ll be making decisions next month with his own job on the line.

According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, Breslow’s uncertain status could be the biggest wild card for Boston as the July 30 trade deadline approaches. Olney framed it bluntly: if the Red Sox fade, Breslow might be out. And that, in turn, could shape whether the team buys or sells.

The X factor nobody’s talking about

Olney wrote that the question is whether Breslow’s potential desperation to keep his job makes him more aggressive. Would he push for expensive additions at the deadline? And would ownership sign off on that if they’re already leaning toward a rebuild?

It’s a tricky spot. Buying big at the deadline could turn the Sox into a contender and save Breslow’s job. But it’s risky — especially for a team that’s been mediocre for most of the season. A more patient rebuild might be smarter long-term, but that assumes Breslow will be around to see it through. If he’s worried about getting fired, patience is a luxury he might not have.

The wild card race is still in play

Here’s the thing though. The Red Sox are only six games back in the AL wild card race. And the American League is weirdly weak this year. Nobody is running away with anything. So Boston making a run isn’t impossible. It’s just unlikely based on what they’ve shown so far.

But that’s the tension. Breslow has to decide if this roster is worth doubling down on. And he has to do it knowing his future might depend on the call.

The Red Sox have not commented on any internal job discussions. But the rumor mill is already spinning. Fans online are split between wanting a full teardown and hoping the team makes a push. Neither camp is exactly thrilled with the current state of things.

Either way, Breslow is the guy who has to make the call. And if his job really is at risk, that decision just got a whole lot messier. The trade deadline is three weeks away. That’s a long time for a front office to figure out what it wants to be.
