Tyler Adams Is a Fallback Option if Alex Scott Deal Collapses. Nothing’s Working for United’s Midfield Search.

Manchester United’s summer midfield rebuild is turning into a genuine headache. They’ve already struck out on three primary targets. Now they’re looking at Alex Scott from Bournemouth, and even that might not work out. If it doesn’t, Tyler Adams is the backup plan.

United wanted Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali early on. Both deals fell through on price. INEOS then turned to Mateus Fernandes at West Ham. That one looked close to done — Fernandes supposedly wanted to play alongside his idol Bruno Fernandes. But Tottenham swooped in late with a bigger offer, and the Portuguese midfielder went north instead. Fernandes insisted it wasn’t about money, but let’s be real. It was at least a little about money.

So now it’s Alex Scott. The 22-year-old Bournemouth midfielder is the new priority. But the Cherries don’t want to sell. They already turned down an approach from Arsenal. According to BBC reporting, Bournemouth is keen to lock Scott into a long-term deal. That means even if United push, they might get nowhere. Scott won’t come cheap either.

If this falls through for a fourth time, United will pivot to Scott’s teammate Tyler Adams. The U.S. international is currently playing well at the World Cup. Club analysts reportedly think Adams is better than Rodri from Manchester City in certain defensive aspects. That’s a bold take, but it’s the kind of internal confidence that drives these decisions.

Adams is a more ready-made option for the defensive midfield role. He’s also significantly cheaper. The question is whether INEOS moves on him now or keeps chasing Scott. Bournemouth has made their position clear on Scott, but United has been stubborn before.

This whole chase feels a bit reactive. United’s midfield targets keep getting picked off by other clubs, and the list of available players is shrinking. Adams is solid, but he’s not the flashy signing fans want. He’d be a functional one though, and sometimes that’s what a team needs mid-rebuild.

For now, United is assessing. They might circle back to Scott, try to negotiate with Bournemouth, or just pull the trigger on Adams. Either way, they need someone in that midfield before the window closes. They can’t afford another miss.
