Manchester United’s summer transfer window has been slow so far, but club legend Rio Ferdinand just lit a fire under one of the biggest rumors floating around Old Trafford.
Speaking on his podcast, Ferdinand sent a direct message to Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni. And he wasn’t subtle about it.
“If Tchouameni has a half a sniff of getting out of that club, Man Utd have to be the first team at the door knocking,” Ferdinand said. “Get him signed, sealed, delivered.”
The French international has been linked with United before, but with Casemiro leaving on a free transfer this summer, the need for a top-tier defensive midfielder is suddenly urgent. Tchouameni, 26, was originally brought to Madrid to replace Casemiro back in 2022. The symmetry writes itself.
Ferdinand went even further, looking straight into the camera and addressing Tchouameni directly.
“I know we’ve had a few conversations in private, but man, I know you watch the show. Looking down the lens right now at you, there’s only one club for you, man. If you’re looking to leave Real Madrid, we are the club. Man Utd are the club. If you want to make it happen, make the call.”
That’s about as aggressive a recruiting pitch as you’ll hear from a retired player.
According to reports, Tchouameni is open to joining United this summer. He’s under contract at the Bernabeu until 2028 and would likely cost around £87 million. That’s a lot of money for a club that has been cautious so far, especially with INEOS running the show now.
United have already agreed to sign Atalanta’s Ederson, though nothing’s official yet. They’ve also been linked with West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, but Tottenham is pushing hard for him. Meanwhile, Elliot Anderson seems headed to Manchester City. So the midfield rebuild is still taking shape, and Tchouameni would be the crown jewel.
Last season he played 49 games for Madrid, scoring two goals and adding two assists. Not flashy numbers, but that’s not his job. He’s a destroyer. A guy who reads the game, breaks up play, and lets everyone else do the pretty stuff. Exactly what United have been missing since Casemiro’s legs started going.
The risk? He’d be jumping into the Premier League with no adjustment period. United need someone who can step in and play 35 games next season. There’s no time to ease into things.
Ferdinand seems convinced it’s the right move. And he’s not afraid to say it publicly.
Whether Tchouameni actually picks up the phone remains to be seen.
