Rio Ferdinand Personally Pushed Tchouaméni to Pick Man United Over Everybody Else

Rio Ferdinand didn’t just talk about Aurélien Tchouaméni on his podcast this week. He talked directly to him. And he made it clear: if the Real Madrid midfielder wants out of Spain, there’s only one destination on the table.

The former Manchester United defender revealed he’s had private conversations with the 26-year-old Frenchman. And he used his public platform to throw the full weight of his pitch at Tchouaméni, essentially telling him that Old Trafford is where he belongs.

“If Tchouaméni has even the slightest hint of leaving that club, Manchester United has to be the first at the door knocking and making sure he can’t even talk to anyone else,” Ferdinand said on his podcast. “Tchouaméni, I know we had a few private conversations. I know you watch the show, there’s only one club for you, mate. If you’re thinking of leaving Real Madrid, we’re the club, Man United is the club.”

That’s about as direct as a recruiting pitch gets from a club legend who never actually played for the team as an executive. Ferdinand isn’t on United’s payroll in an official capacity. But he clearly still carries weight around Carrington and he’s not shy about using it.

Tchouaméni has been linked with a move to the Premier League for months now. United’s midfield has been a problem area for years — Casemiro aged out, Christian Eriksen can’t cover ground the way he used to, and Kobbie Mainoo is still young even if he looks like a future star. The club needs a physical, ball-winning presence who can also play forward. Tchouaméni fits that profile perfectly. He did it at Monaco, he’s done it in patches at Madrid, and at 26 he’s entering his prime.

The tricky part is getting him out of the Bernabéu. Real Madrid didn’t spend big on him just to let him walk three years later. But with Eduardo Camavinga, Federico Valverde, and Jude Bellingham all ahead of him in the pecking order, and reports suggesting Madrid might add another midfielder this summer, Tchouaméni could realistically see the writing on the wall.

United would have to pay a premium. That’s the problem with buying from Real Madrid — they don’t do discounts. But if Ferdinand’s message gets through, and if Tchouaméni actually wants the move, then United at least know they’d have a chance.

Ferdinand made sure everybody knows where he stands. And Tchouaméni, if he was listening, got the message loud and clear.
