Manchester City’s £200M Midfield Plan Could Force Rodri Out the Door

Manchester City’s £200M Midfield Plan Could Force Rodri Out the Door

Manchester City just agreed to a deal for Elliot Anderson. That was supposed to be that. But according to The Telegraph, the Premier League champions aren’t done spending. They’re still expected to push hard for Sandro Tonali as well, even though Newcastle slapped a £100 million price tag on the Italian midfielder.

That’s a lot of cash for one midfield. Combine Anderson and Tonali and you’re looking at well over £200 million in new bodies for the center of the park. Which raises an obvious question: what does that mean for Rodri?

The 28-year-old Spaniard has been arguably the most important player in Pep Guardiola’s system. But there’s been noise about his future for a while now. Fabrizio Romano recently posted on YouTube about Real Madrid’s interest, and it’s hard to ignore the smoke. If City is seriously about to drop nine figures on two midfielders, it’s not unreasonable to think they’re preparing for life without their anchor.

Tonali weighing options beyond Newcastle

Tonali has been a force since moving to St. James’ Park. The 26-year-old Italy international controls games from deep, reads play well, and has that nasty edge you need in the Premier League. He’s also not short on suitors. The Telegraph reports Tottenham is currently further along in negotiations, and the player would reportedly consider a move to north London. But if City comes calling, that calculation changes.

Arsenal is also in the mix, according to BBC Sport. The Gunners like Tonali and have also been linked with his Newcastle teammate Bruno Guimaraes, plus Bournemouth’s Alex Scott and Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi. So there’s no shortage of competition.

How does Anderson fit in?

City’s deal for Anderson was already a statement. The 22-year-old is a versatile midfielder who can play wide or centrally. But adding Tonali on top of that feels like overkill unless someone is leaving. You can’t realistically rotate Rodri, Anderson, and Tonali through one or two spots without one of them being unhappy. And Rodri isn’t the type to accept a bench role.

Manchester United was also mentioned as a potential landing spot for Tonali earlier in the window, though that chatter cooled when City seemed focused on Anderson. Now that both targets appear active, the rumor mill is going to stay hot.

None of this is confirmed, of course. City hasn’t said anything publicly about overhauling the midfield. But the pattern is hard to ignore. If you’re spending £200 million on two midfielders in one window, you’re not just adding depth. You’re signaling a shift. Whether Rodri stays or goes might depend on how much truth there is to that Madrid interest. And if he does go, City just might have his replacements lined up already.
