A 17-Year-Old Mexican Playmaker Has Caught Manchester United’s Eye. Should They Move Now?

Manchester United is reportedly in the mix to sign Club Tijuana attacking midfielder Gilberto Mora. And they’re not alone. According to journalist Graeme Bailey, the Red Devils will have to beat out Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool for the Mexican teenager’s signature this summer.

Mora, just 17 years old, put together a solid season in Liga MX last year. He scored six goals and added one assist in 20 appearances across all competitions for Tijuana. Not eye-popping numbers, but for a player his age in a senior league, it’s enough to draw serious attention from the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

Here’s where it gets complicated. Mora’s current contract runs through the summer of 2029. That gives Tijuana plenty of leverage. Any club looking to pry him away this offseason will almost certainly have to pay a premium. Cheap signings from North America aren’t really a thing anymore, especially for players with this kind of runway ahead of them.

What Mora Brings to the Table

He’s a natural attacking midfielder who can also slide over to the left wing. He’s comfortable on the ball, likes to dribble into space, and has a good eye for a line-breaking pass. He can also shoot from distance — something United’s current midfield doesn’t exactly have in abundance.

But let’s be real about what he is right now. He’s raw. He’s not walking into Old Trafford and starting 30 games. If United lands him, he’s a development piece. A rotational guy at best in year one. Michael Carrick would need to be patient with him, and so would the fanbase.

That said, the raw tools are there. He’s already one of the most promising young playmakers in Mexico. And in a league where young talent gets scooped up earlier every year, waiting too long could mean missing out entirely.

Mora also played in the 2026 World Cup for Mexico, which is insane for a 17-year-old. He got minutes in a group-stage win against South Africa. That kind of experience at his age doesn’t hurt his stock.

The Premier League Interest Is Real

It’s not just United. City, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool are all reportedly keeping tabs. That’s basically the entire top half of the league circling the same teenager. When that happens, you know there’s something there.

For United specifically, the question is whether they want to fight that kind of bidding war for a player who won’t help them win now. The club has been burned before on big-money youth signings who needed time. But if they pass, one of those other four clubs probably doesn’t.

Mora’s long-term upside is real. He’s got the footwork, the vision, and the temperament. He needs to get stronger and more consistent, but that’s true of basically every 17-year-old on the planet.

If United wants him, they’ll need to act fast and pay up. Otherwise, they might be watching him tear it up for a rival in a few years.
