Giants’ Abdul Carter Limps Off at Minicamp — What His Injury Means for the Season

The New York Giants kicked off mandatory minicamp this week with new energy under head coach John Harbaugh — but the optimism took a sudden, unsettling turn on Monday when defensive star Abdul Carter was spotted hobbling off the field in what sources describe as a “concerning” scene.

The 22-year-old edge rusher, selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, reportedly began limping heavily during practice before being pulled aside by team medical staff. According to Pat Leonard of NYDN Sports, Carter was seen with his entire left shoe and sock removed as trainers conducted an examination on the sideline. The former Penn State standout then retreated to the indoor facility for further testing while his teammates continued their drills outside.

“Development: Giants edge Abdul Carter had his entire left shoe and sock off, and he’s being examined by trainers,” Leonard reported. “He is limping VERY gingerly off to the side. I didn’t see it happen, but Carter got banged up during this practice. He just limped into the indoor field as practice continues outside.”

The sight sent a ripple of anxiety through the organization, according to sources close to the team. While the Giants are publicly striking an optimistic tone, some insiders reportedly held their breath as Carter disappeared from view. Jordan Raanan of ESPN confirmed that Carter did not return to Monday’s session, though he noted the team’s initial belief is that the injury is not severe.

“Abdul Carter left Monday’s minicamp practice early and did not return,” said Raanan. “The Giants’ initial belief is that he’s OK.”

Those close to the situation caution that more tests are needed before anyone can exhale. The Giants are expected to run a full battery of imaging on Carter’s left foot in the coming hours, and his official status — and the timeline for his return — hangs in the balance. If it’s a minor tweak, the star pass rusher could be back on the field within days. But if the damage is more significant, it could cast a shadow over the team’s entire offseason buildup.

Carter was a revelation as a rookie last season, finishing fifth in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting after tallying 43 combined tackles (25 solo), four sacks, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. His explosive first step and relentless motor made him the anchor of a revamped Giants defense, and the front office built its 2026 plans around his continued development. Any extended absence — however unlikely at this point — would be a gut punch to a team that expects to compete in a loaded NFC East.

For now, Giants fans can only wait and hope. As one team insider put it: “They’re saying all the right things, but nobody’s celebrating until the MRI comes back clean.”
