Paul Pierce didn’t hold back when asked about the reported altercation between former Miami Heat teammates Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo. The Hall of Fame forward went straight to the point, saying Herro basically asked for what happened.
“Listen, that tells you don’t write a check your ass can’t cash,” Pierce said on the No Fouls Given show. “Cmon now. Struck him. And Bam is not no little boy.”
The fight reportedly broke out during NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. According to multiple reports, things escalated after Herro sent a fan some direct messages that ended up getting leaked. Those DMs apparently contained some less-than-flattering thoughts about Adebayo. When Adebayo found out, he confronted Herro and reportedly punched him in the face before teammates and staff separated them.
Pierce’s take was blunt. He thinks Herro underestimated who he was dealing with. Adebayo is a three-time All-Defensive selection and one of the strongest players in the league. He’s not someone you want to test physically, and Pierce made it clear Herro should have known better.
Former NBA guard Danny Green also weighed in on the situation during his Inside The Green Room podcast. Green focused less on the physical aspect and more on Herro’s questionable decision to talk trash to a fan in private messages.
“You know it’s coming to light,” Green said. “I don’t think he’s the brightest tool in the shed, but he’s not the dullest tool in the shed. I don’t think he’s that dumb to think ‘Oh, this is never going to get out.’ Maybe he had conversed with this person before and they had trusted conversations and maybe he thought ‘Oh, this person is pretty cool. I don’t think it’ll get out.’ But at this point it’s like you don’t care. If you’re doing this talking to a fan and not a close friend, you should know there’s a good chance of this getting to the people.”
Green’s point is pretty simple. If you’re an NBA player and you’re venting about a teammate in DMs to a random fan, you have to assume that message is going to circulate. It’s basic common sense, but apparently Herro didn’t factor that in.
The Heat organization has not officially commented on the fight. Neither Herro nor Adebayo has addressed it publicly. But the story has been running through NBA circles all week, and the reactions keep coming.
For Pierce, this is a classic case of someone talking tough and then getting reminded that words have consequences. Especially when the other guy can back up whatever he’s feeling with force.
“That tells you don’t write a check your ass can’t cash,” Pierce repeated. The message was clear. And based on how it played out, Herro probably cashed that check the hard way.
