The Kawhi Leonard trade between the Toronto Raptors and LA Clippers was supposed to be a done deal. Then the NBA stepped in. Now the whole thing is stuck in neutral while the league investigates whether Leonard and the Clippers tried to game the salary cap through a shady endorsement deal with a company called Aspiration.
Former Raptors star Chris Bosh knows exactly what it feels like to be in limbo during a trade. And he’s not shy about saying this situation is brutal for the players caught in the middle.
“It’s a real tough situation because there are players in this trade, it’s tough to get traded by a team and then saying, ‘hold on, you’re not traded yet,’” Bosh said. “Will this have implications on the package that the Clippers can receive and the implications on Kawhi Leonard’s contract and his dealings moving forward.”
Bosh did add that he’s happy for Raptors fans who now get to dream about Leonard coming back to Toronto. The guy brought them a championship in 2019. That kind of goodwill doesn’t fade fast.
What Actually Happened
Here’s the deal that got agreed to: Toronto sends Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and multiple draft picks to the Clippers for Leonard. Simple enough on paper. But the NBA put the brakes on it this week when they announced they would assume any punishment that comes out of their investigation into Leonard’s connection with Aspiration.
The heart of the issue is that Aspiration accused Leonard of signing an endorsement deal with them as a way to quietly move money around and help the Clippers stay under the salary cap. Both Leonard and the Clippers have denied any wrongdoing.
The league hasn’t given any timeline for when they’ll make a ruling. So everyone just waits.
For the Raptors, this delay is a headache. They were hoping to bring Leonard back and make a real push in the Eastern Conference again. For the players heading to the Clippers, it’s even worse. Imagine packing your bags, saying goodbye to your teammates, and then getting told to hold tight because the league wants to check some emails first.
Bosh gets it. He went through his own messy exit from Toronto before landing in Miami. He knows how disorienting it is when the business side of basketball takes over and your life gets put on pause.
The NBA has not commented further on the investigation or when they expect to finish it. For now, the trade sits in limbo and everybody’s waiting on a ruling that could reshape two rosters and set off a chain reaction across the league.
