Manchester United’s summer midfield rebuild was supposed to be moving in a clear direction. Then Ederson’s medical happened, and things got messy fast.
The Atalanta midfielder had a deal in place to join the club, but according to multiple reports, the medical results raised enough red flags that United backed off. The move is now effectively dead, and that leaves a hole in the middle of the park the club still needs to address.
United have already missed on a handful of other targets too. Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes all went elsewhere. Bruno Guimarães looks headed to Arsenal, not Old Trafford. So the club agreed a deal with Chelsea for Andrey Santos, but that still leaves them needing at least two more bodies in midfield.
According to Eduardo Burgos, a journalist with Spanish newspaper AS, there are three names on United’s radar now. And two of them just played their way into the conversation at the World Cup.
Ayyoub Bouaddi Is the Name to Know
Bouaddi is only 18 years old. But during Morocco’s run to the World Cup quarterfinals, he didn’t look like a teenager out there. He won battles in midfield, read the game at a level that surprised scouts, and generally handled the pressure like someone with twice his experience. United have been following him since the start of the season, Burgos reports, and they kept a close eye on him during the tournament.
He’s been described as an exceptionally intelligent midfielder with elite long-term potential. Technically refined, complete, the kind of player who could grow into a central role for a decade. That’s the pitch anyway.
Manu Koné and Alex Scott Are Also in the Mix
Koné has been one of the surprises of the World Cup for France. He basically took Aurelien Tchouameni’s spot in the starting lineup while Tchouameni dealt with nagging injuries, and he looked comfortable doing it. Roma holds his rights and reportedly wants to boost his value through the tournament before any sale, so this one might take time.
Alex Scott is the guy United like for his age and potential, though his price tag won’t be cheap. He made a real impression at Bournemouth last season, helping them qualify for the Europa League, which nobody saw coming. Premier League teams know what he brings, and Bournemouth will ask for a premium.
United have not confirmed any of these targets publicly. But with Ederson out and the midfield still thin, something has to give soon.
