CC Sabathia’s Son Just Got Drafted by the Brewers. The Dad’s Reaction Was Perfect.

The Milwaukee Brewers used their final pick in the 2026 MLB Draft on Sunday to select first baseman Carsten Sabathia III. That name should sound familiar. He’s the son of Hall of Fame pitcher CC Sabathia, who spent a legendary half-season with the Brewers in 2008.

Carsten went with the No. 611 overall pick in the 20th round. The Brewers took 20 players total, and he was the last one. But the moment was bigger than a late-round selection.

A family reunion of sorts

CC Sabathia was inducted into the Brewers’ Wall of Honor earlier this year. So when his son got picked by the same franchise, the pride was obvious. CC posted on social media: “My son was drafted to the league tonight!!! So proud of you Carsten.”

Carsten is a 22-year-old first baseman and designated hitter. Unlike his dad, who made his name as a dominant left-handed pitcher, Carsten focused on hitting. That shift happened after an arm injury at age 11. His dad told him to move away from pitching and concentrate on offense. Good call, apparently.

What the numbers say

At the MLB Draft Combine, Carsten crushed seven batted balls with exit velocities of 104.9 mph or harder. That kind of raw power gets scouts’ attention. He played two seasons at Georgia Tech before transferring to Houston. After shoulder surgery in 2025 and going undrafted that year, he came back in 2026 and hit .283/.374/.511 with six homers in 107 plate appearances. He split time between first base and DH, appearing in 37 games for Houston. He also played 11 games with the Trenton Thunder in the MLB Draft League.

Across four NCAA seasons, Carsten finished with a .254 average, 48 hits, nine home runs, 42 RBIs and a .789 OPS. Most of that production came after he got regular playing time at Houston.

Another family connection in the organization

Carsten gets to reunite with an old friend in the Brewers system. Jadyn Fielder, son of former Brewers slugger Prince Fielder, signed with Milwaukee as an undrafted free agent in 2025. He’s currently playing at Class A Wilson. Both families go way back. CC and Prince were teammates on the Brewers in 2008. Now their kids are in the same organization.

CC Sabathia’s 2008 run with the Brewers is still one of the best stretches a pitcher has ever had. He went 11-2 with a 1.65 ERA in 17 starts, throwing seven complete games and three shutouts. The Brewers made the playoffs for the first time in 26 years. Carsten wasn’t even born yet. Now he’s carrying the family name back to Milwaukee.
