Manchester United are working fast on the midfield rebuild, and the latest name on their board is Manu Kone. The Roma midfielder is a serious option as the club scrambles for a third summer signing in the middle of the park.
Kone wants to play in the Premier League. Roma needs to sell. That combination has United’s attention.
The asking price sits around £50 million, according to reports. Roma qualified for the Champions League but they still have to meet UEFA’s financial rules, and Kone is their most valuable asset they’re willing to part with. They bought him from Borussia Monchengladbach for under £20 million in 2024. A £50 million sale would more than double their money in one season.
Why Kone fits what United need
He’s 25, played 37 matches last season, and slotted in as both a defensive midfielder and a box-to-box guy. Two goals, three assists. Not flashy numbers but his work goes beyond the stat sheet.
Patrick Vieira called him the best midfielder in France. That’s not nothing. And the World Cup only boosted his profile. Kone started four of France’s six matches, sitting in front of the defense and letting the attackers do their thing. He also filled in for Aurelien Tchouameni during the tournament.
Tchouameni was United’s dream target. But after talks with Jose Mourinho, he committed to Real Madrid. That forced United to pivot.
The dominoes that sped things up
There are layers to this. The Tchouameni decision was the first push. Then Ederson’s move from Atalanta hit a snag after medical concerns, according to TEAMtalk. That threw a wrench in things.
On top of that, Manuel Ugarte is out long-term with a knee injury. So United are thin. Really thin.
But they’re not alone in this. Intermediaries have reached out to Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool about Kone. Arsenal look like the most serious threat. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Andrey Santos is close to a £50 million move of his own, which might take another buyer out of the picture.
United need to act fast. The summer window doesn’t wait around, and the competition is real. Kone fits the profile Michael Carrick wants. The question is whether United can close the deal before someone else does.
