Manchester United Threw $136 Million at Real Madrid for Tchouameni. Madrid Said No.

Manchester United went big this week. Real Madrid said not interested. That’s the short version of a story that tells you a lot about how the summer transfer window is shaping up for both clubs.

According to Spanish outlet Defensa Central, United submitted a €120 million offer — roughly $136 million — for midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni on Monday. The bid was structured as €100 million up front with another €20 million in add-ons. Madrid turned it down flat.

And not just Madrid, apparently. The report says Jose Mourinho wasn’t interested in selling. The player wasn’t interested in leaving either. Tchouameni has already signed a new contract that runs through 2031, so this was never going to be a negotiation that went anywhere.

But here’s what’s interesting: United was willing to throw that kind of money around in the first place.

The Casemiro hole is real

Michael Carrick took over as permanent manager in May after initially stepping in as Ruben Amorim’s interim replacement. He guided United to a third-place finish in the Premier League last season, which was better than anyone expected. But now he has to rebuild a midfield that just lost Casemiro to free agency.

Casemiro was the backbone of that team in the second half of the season. His departure leaves a massive gap. United has been linked with Atalanta’s Ederson and Chelsea’s Andrey Santos, and those deals might happen. But those are different kinds of players. Tchouameni is a true defensive midfielder who could have stepped in and done what Casemiro did.

United also missed out on Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes this summer, which complicates things further. The transfer plan clearly had Tchouameni as the top target for that position, and now that door is closed.

Tchouameni’s value to Madrid

The French international was one of the bright spots for Real Madrid last season. He played 49 matches across all competitions, scoring twice and adding two assists. Those numbers don’t jump off the page, but his role was about control and structure, not flashy stats. Madrid saw him as part of the long-term core, which is why they locked him up through 2031.

Selling him just wasn’t on the table, even for a nine-figure offer.

But United’s willingness to go that high on the bid signals that INEOS still has serious financial firepower left. The club can still go get a big-name signing if the right player becomes available. They just have to find one who’s actually available.

The clock is ticking. The new season starts in a few weeks, and United’s midfield still looks one injury away from trouble. Tchouameni was the dream. Now it’s time for Plan B.
