Manchester United’s summer business just picked up hard. The club locked in two signings on Thursday, including a midfielder who officially completed his medical and a veteran goalkeeper who chose the Red Devils over a return to his former club.
The first and bigger domino is Andrey Santos. The 22-year-old has been the subject of an agreed deal between Chelsea and United worth £50 million, with £48 million guaranteed and another £2 million in add-ons. He passed his medical today, and according to transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano, both clubs have already signed all the paperwork to make the transfer official.
Romano posted on X: “Andrey Santos has just completed a successful medical as new Manchester United player. Clubs signed all documents for £50m package deal. Andrey signs tomorrow, Friday on deal until June 2031 plus option at #MUFC.”
Santos will sign a five-year contract with a club option for a sixth season. The deal has been in the works for a while, with personal terms already settled. That’s not nothing, considering how messy Chelsea-to-United transfers can get.
Another midfielder is still in the works
United also have a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson sitting there, but it’s not done yet. The two clubs agreed on a €45 million (£38 million) fee roughly six weeks ago. Ederson passed the first part of his medical while he was with Brazil at the World Cup in the U.S., but United wants a second round of checks in England. If he clears that, the club will decide whether to push the deal through. If he fails, the whole thing falls apart.
That’s a big if, but it means United could end the week with two new midfielders if everything lines up.
Darlow picks United over Leeds
The other signing Thursday is free agent goalkeeper Karl Darlow. The 35-year-old was at Leeds United last season but left when his contract expired. Leeds had offered him a new deal to stay at Elland Road, but Darlow chose United instead.
Romano gave the move his “here we go” stamp. Darlow is expected to back up Senne Lammens, with Andre Onana out on another loan at Trabzonspor and Altay Bayindir likely headed for the exit. United needed a reliable second option in net, and Darlow fits that role without costing a transfer fee.
That’s two done in one day, with a third potentially on the way. Not bad for a Thursday in July.
