Liverpool’s ‘Ideal’ Midfield Target Just Got Cheaper After Atletico Deal Collapsed

The price tag on Joao Gomes just dropped. And that changes things for Liverpool.

The Wolves midfielder was reportedly set to join Atletico Madrid for £38 million this summer. That deal fell apart. Now the same player is available for around £30 million. According to Football Insider, Liverpool sees Gomes as the ‘ideal’ addition to their midfield. And at that price, he’s suddenly a lot more interesting.

Gomes has 116 Premier League appearances under his belt. He knows the league. He’s physical, he reads the game well, and he’s still only 24 years old. For a Liverpool team that needs someone who can step in and compete immediately, that experience matters.

Why United Is Also in the Mix

Manchester United had already been watching Gomes. When his move to Atletico fell through, they reached out to his representatives. TEAMtalk reported that. United has already signed Andrey Santos this summer and has a deal in place for Youri Tielemans at £35 million. But the club is reportedly still looking for a third midfielder.

They had also been linked with Atalanta’s Ederson. That deal was reportedly agreed on all sides, and Ederson even flew to England for a medical after the World Cup. But United pulled out. The £35 million they would have spent on him is now going to Tielemans. That leaves room for another signing. And Gomes at £30 million is a bargain by current market standards.

Gomes Wants to Stay in the Premier League

The Brazilian midfielder prefers to stay in England. That much is clear. According to sources, he has no strong preference between Liverpool and United. He just wants to keep playing in the league he knows.

That puts both clubs in a similar position. Liverpool needs depth in midfield. Andoni Iraola wants fresh legs in the engine room. United wants another body in the middle of the park. Both teams have the cash. Both teams have interest.

At £30 million, Gomes is essentially a discount on what he was worth a month ago. That kind of drop can force a decision. If Liverpool hesitates, United might not. If United drags its feet, Liverpool might swoop in.

Right now neither club has made a formal bid. The interest is real. The price is right. But the next move belongs to whoever picks up the phone first.
