Manchester United have added a proven Premier League winner to their midfield, landing Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35 million after triggering his release clause. The Belgium captain signed a four-year deal at Old Trafford, becoming the club’s third summer addition.
Tielemans called the move the “culmination” of his career and said joining United felt “special.” He joins after Andrey Santos arrived from Chelsea for £48 million and veteran goalkeeper Karl Darlow came in on a free from Leeds.
“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United,” Tielemans said. “Signing for such a special club feels incredible. It is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football. I have had the privilege of experiencing success in the game and it has only increased my determination to achieve more. The ambition from everyone at the club is extremely clear; we are all determined to push for the biggest trophies over the coming years.”
The move didn’t happen in a vacuum. United had chased several other midfield targets this window, including Elliot Anderson — who ended up at Manchester City for a staggering £116 million — and Mateus Fernandes, who joined Tottenham for £85 million. They also walked away from a £35 million deal for Brazilian midfielder Ederson after a medical flagged concerns, though the club hasn’t closed the door on revisiting that one with Atalanta.
Tielemans brings serious hardware. He scored the winner for Leicester in the 2021 FA Cup final and played a key role in Villa’s Europa League final win over Freiburg in May. That trophy experience, plus seven years of Premier League consistency, was the main selling point for United’s director of football Jason Wilcox.
“Youri has consistently been one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League throughout the past seven years,” Wilcox said. “He has all of the technical qualities, as well as the ambition and mentality, to thrive at Manchester United. Youri’s consistency is exceptional, and he will add further composure, creativity and leadership to our squad. We are delighted to welcome a player of his influence and experience, both on the pitch and within the dressing room, as we continue to build a team ready to challenge for the biggest honours.”
The signing feels like United finally landing the steady, experienced midfield presence they’ve been hunting for. Tielemans can sit deep or push forward, he reads the game well, and he’s rarely injured. At 29, he’s entering his prime years and should slot straight into Erik ten Hag’s first-choice lineup.
One thing worth watching: United still have work to do in midfield. They missed on Anderson and Fernandes, and the Ederson situation is unresolved. Tielemans fills a hole, but he doesn’t solve every problem.
