Bryson DeChambeau Can’t Make a Cut at a Major. Now He’s Trying 3D-Printed Irons at The Open.

Bryson DeChambeau has a problem. And it’s not one you can fix with a physics degree or a new set of irons — though he’s trying that too.

DeChambeau is one of just three players who have missed the cut in all three majors so far this season. That’s the Masters, the PGA Championship, and the U.S. Open. All of them. For a guy who won the U.S. Open in 2024 and has finished runner-up at the PGA Championship twice since then, that’s a brutal stretch.

ESPN golf reporter Mark Schlbach brought it up on the Pat McAfee Show this week, and he didn’t sugarcoat it.

“Other big storyline, can Bryson DeChambeau make a cut? He is one of three guys who missed the cut in all three majors. He’s got an entire set now of 3D-printed irons that he’ll play with this week. So that will be fun to watch,” Schlbach said.

So yeah. New equipment. Same old questions.

DeChambeau’s Major Roller Coaster

Here’s the weird part: DeChambeau has been really good at majors recently. He just can’t seem to put four rounds together anymore.

In 2024, he finished T6 at the Masters, second at the PGA Championship, won the U.S. Open — then missed the cut at The Open. Last year, he was T5 at Augusta, T2 at the PGA, missed the cut at the U.S. Open, and then T10 at The Open. It’s been boom or bust, and lately it’s been more bust.

His last made cut at a major was that T10 at The Open Championship in 2025. That’s a long time for someone of his caliber.

The Other Guys Who Can’t Make Cuts

DeChambeau is in bad company, but not the kind that makes him feel better.

Harry Hall is also 0-for-3 in majors this year. He’s got one PGA Tour win — the 2024 ISCO Championship — and has only played in six majors total. He made the cut at last year’s PGA Championship (T19) and The Open (T28), so it’s not like he can’t hang. But this season has been rough.

Then there’s JJ Spaun. He missed three cuts in six majors before this season, with a best finish of T23. This year he was 50th at the Masters, T37 at the PGA — and then he won the U.S. Open. Seriously. He won it. Then he finished T23 at The Open. So at least he got the trophy. That’s more than Hall or DeChambeau can say this year.

The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale starts Thursday. DeChambeau tees off early — 4:58 a.m. ET alongside Scottie Scheffler and Tyrrell Hatton — then again at 10:04 a.m. ET on Friday. We’ll find out pretty quick whether those 3D-printed irons make a difference or if it’s just another week of watching a former major winner struggle to stick around for the weekend.
