Manchester United just landed their third piece of summer business, and it’s a big one. Youri Tielemans, the Belgium national team captain, is officially a Red Devil after a $35 million move from Aston Villa. The deal was finalized on Tuesday, with the 29-year-old signing a five-year contract that runs through 2031.
Tielemans didn’t play in Belgium’s World Cup quarterfinal loss to Brazil last week. A hamstring injury kept him out of that 2-1 defeat. But he’s healthy now and ready to slot into Michael Carrick’s midfield at Old Trafford.
Here’s the interesting part: this transfer went down because of a release clause in Tielemans’ Villa contract. United triggered it, and the deal moved fast from there. No long negotiation. No drama. Just a straightforward activation of a price tag that was already set.
How Tielemans Got Here
Tielemans first made his name in the Premier League at Leicester City. He joined the Foxes on loan from Monaco in 2019, then made it permanent after helping them win the FA Cup. He spent four years in the East Midlands before moving to Villa Park in 2023.
In two seasons with Aston Villa, Tielemans made 134 appearances and scored 10 goals. He wasn’t always the flashiest name on the team sheet, but he was consistent. Reliable. The kind of midfielder who doesn’t get enough credit until he’s gone.
Now, he’s the third addition for United this summer, following young Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos and veteran goalkeeper Karl Darlow through the door. United’s front office has been quiet compared to some other Premier League clubs, but they’re making targeted moves.
What Tielemans Brings
“It’s hard to describe just how proud I am to join Manchester United,” Tielemans said. “Signing for such a special club feels incredible. It is the culmination of years of dedication since I first fell in love with football.”
He added: “I have had the privilege of experiencing success in the game, and it has only increased my determination to achieve more. The ambition from everyone at the club is extremely clear. We are all determined to push for the biggest trophies over the coming years.”
United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, called Tielemans “one of the most outstanding midfielders in the Premier League” and said he has “all of the technical qualities, ambition and mentality” to succeed at Old Trafford.
The numbers back it up. Tielemans is a box-to-box midfielder with a strong passing range, decent defensive instincts, and a knack for arriving late in the box. He’s not flashy, but he’s effective. And at 29, he’s in his prime years.
United fans will be watching closely. Tielemans is expected to join the squad for preseason training next week.
