Leeds United’s Goalkeeper Crisis Just Got Worse. Here’s the Mess They’re In.

Leeds United walked into the summer transfer window thinking they had a plan. They don’t. Not really. Not at goalkeeper, anyway.

Illan Meslier is gone to Arsenal. Karl Darlow is reportedly headed to Manchester United on a free transfer. And Lucas Perri, the £16 million Brazilian they signed last year? He got benched in January after letting in two soft goals against Manchester United and Newcastle, and barely played after that. So now Daniel Farke is staring at a depth chart that reads: Perri, a backup they extended (Alex Cairns), and a whole lot of uncertainty.

This is not where Leeds wanted to be. Not after last summer, which was otherwise close to perfect. Their recruitment was sharp. They finished 14th, which for a promoted side is legitimately impressive. They added Harry Wilson on a free transfer to fix the creative hole. But the goalkeeper spot has been a problem for years, and now it’s back at the top of the to-do list.

Who’s Available and What’s It Going to Cost?

The club has identified two targets. Zion Suzuki, the Japan international who’s been on their radar before. And James Trafford, the England U21 guy who started for Burnley in the Premier League and got dropped. Both are young. Both have upside. And both are reportedly priced at £30 million or more.

That’s a problem. Because the new Squad Cost Ratio rule is squeezing short-term spending across the Premier League, and Leeds just spent big on Perri last year. They can’t exactly throw another £30 million at the position without consequences elsewhere. So they have a choice. Pay up now for a long-term answer, or kick the can down the road and hope Perri figures it out. Again.

One More Thing to Watch

The club extended Alex Cairns’ deal, which is fine. He’s a solid third-choice. But if Perri is your starter in August, that’s a gamble. He struggled with confidence last season. The Premier League does not care about your confidence. And the fans at Elland Road are not known for their patience.

Meanwhile, Darlow’s move to Manchester United makes a lot of sense for him. He’s 35, he’s experienced, and he’d be a reliable No. 2 behind whoever United brings in. For Leeds, losing him as a veteran presence in the room is another small loss that adds up.

The bottom line is this: Leeds needed a goalkeeper last summer. They made a bet on Perri. That bet didn’t pay off. Now they have to go back to the market with less money, fewer options, and the same hole in the lineup. It’s not a crisis yet. But it’s getting close.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the club has made no decision on which direction to go. They are still evaluating. Which, at this point in the summer, is not a comforting sign.
