Harry Kane has faced some of the best defenders in the world, but nothing quite prepared him for the golf game of Donald Trump.
Eighteen months ago, the England captain got an invitation to play a round with the then-U.S. President at a course in Palm Beach, Florida. Kane accepted. And what happened next left him shook in a way that had nothing to do with penalty kicks or Bayern Munich.
Surreal Experience on the Fairway
Speaking ahead of England’s World Cup quarterfinal against Norway on Saturday, Kane described the round as, quote, “a pretty surreal experience.” The 32-year-old striker admitted he played okay but was genuinely impressed by Trump’s game at age 80.
“I hope I can play golf as good as him when I’m his age, that’s for sure,” Kane said. “When the President invites you somewhere, it was a pretty surreal experience just to meet him and obviously play golf with him. A unique experience, but I was just grateful that he invited me to play.”
Trump had already spilled the beans to reporters earlier in the week, calling Kane “a great player” and praising the Bayern Munich star’s golf skills. Trump said Kane is “really great” on the course, which is high praise from a guy who owns plenty of them.
Beckham Drops In Before Big Match
Meanwhile, Kane and the rest of the England squad got a morale boost of a different kind ahead of the Norway match. David Beckham showed up at the team’s practice session on Friday at Inter Miami’s training facility in Fort Lauderdale, where the team is based for the tournament.
Beckham, who co-owns Inter Miami, brought his sons Romeo and Cruz along. He hung out with players in the gym, chatted before they hit the field, and gave a simple message: good luck.
“He just wished us luck,” Kane said. “After most games, he messages me, and we stay in touch. He’s a big England fan. We all know how much it meant for him to represent England and be captain and play the way he did every time he wore the shirt.”
Kane noted the team was training at “the home that he built,” meaning the Beckham-owned MLS facility. He called Beckham an “England legend” and said the team hopes to “do him proud” by reaching just the third World Cup semifinal in 60 years.
Trump, for what it’s worth, also took to Truth Social after England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the round of 16, writing simply: “Harry Kane of England is a GREAT player!!!”
The quarterfinal against Norway and Erling Haaland kicks off Saturday in Miami.
