Giannis Antetokounmpo Picked a Heat Teammate as the Best American Big Man in the NBA

Giannis Antetokounmpo hasn’t officially suited up for the Miami Heat yet and he’s already handing out some serious praise to a teammate.

During a recent stream with Neon, the two-time MVP was asked who he thinks is the best American big man in the NBA right now. He didn’t hesitate.

“Bam Adebayo. I’ll tell you right now, it’s Bam Adebayo, bro,” Antetokounmpo said, per Heat Central on X.

That’s a pretty loud co-sign from a guy who shares a frontcourt with Adebayo and knows what elite two-way bigs look like up close. And honestly, it’s not just teammate loyalty talking.

Why Bam Adebayo fits that label

Adebayo has spent years as the Heat’s defensive anchor and versatile offensive threat. He’s a six-time All-Defensive selection who can guard positions 1 through 5, switch onto guards on the perimeter, and still protect the rim. On offense, he’s developed into a reliable playmaker out of the high post and a mid-range threat who doesn’t force bad shots.

But the knock on Adebayo for most of his career has been that he’s best as a second or third option. He thrived next to Jimmy Butler when Miami made those Finals runs. And now he gets to play alongside a legitimate top-five player in the league in Antetokounmpo.

That pairing could be a nightmare for the rest of the East. Miami was already a solid defensive team before this trade. Adding a guy who’s won Defensive Player of the Year and four All-Defensive first-team nods to a frontcourt that already features Adebayo? That’s a problem for everyone else.

The health question

There is one giant caveat here. Antetokounmpo has dealt with a string of soft-tissue leg injuries over the past two seasons. He played just 42 games in 2024-25 and looked limited at times when he was on the floor. That’s part of why Milwaukee didn’t get a massive haul back for him in the trade.

But when he’s healthy? He’s still one of the most dominant forces the league has seen. The Heat are banking on that version showing up in Miami.

This team has made two straight early playoff exits — losing in five games in the first round in 2024 and getting bounced in the play-in by Charlotte this past season. Adding Antetokounmpo changes the ceiling completely. And having Adebayo as the sidekick gives them a frontcourt that can match up with anyone.

The Heat haven’t officially confirmed how they’ll fill out the rest of the roster yet. But with Giannis and Bam together, they already have a foundation that most teams would envy. And at least one of them thinks the other is the best American big man alive.
