LeBron James to the Miami Heat? The chatter is real. But there’s one move the Heat won’t make, even with a potential reunion hanging in the air.
Miami is not actively shopping forward Nikola Jovic, and they definitely aren’t attaching draft picks to move him. That’s according to Ethan J. Skolnick, who reported the Heat’s stance on the 22-year-old. The team believes in his potential, even after a rough season.
Jovic signed a four-year, $62.4 million extension early last season. Then he went out and averaged just 7.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists. His shooting percentages were brutal: 36.6 percent from the field, 26.9 percent from three. He played 47 games, mostly off the bench, logging about 17 minutes a night. Not great. Not what anyone expected after that contract.
But Miami is holding the line. They see something in him. Maybe it’s the size, the passing feel, or the fact that he’s still only 22. They’re not about to dump him with draft capital just to clear cap space or sweeten a deal.
Now about LeBron. The Heat believe they’re still in the mix. Skolnick also reported that James’ camp hasn’t told Miami they’re out of the running. That’s a big deal. The Heat have a roster spot ready if he wants it. They’re not just chasing him for old times’ sake. They think the current roster fits him pretty well — elite defenders who can take pressure off him on that end, plus plenty of transition chances where his playmaking shines. They want him.
The other teams in the picture? The Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers. So it’s a crowded race. But Miami feels like they have a real shot.
There’s also the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade from earlier this year that brought even more attention to the Heat. Landing LeBron on top of that would be something else entirely.
For now, Jovic stays put. The Heat are betting on his development, even as they chase the biggest fish in the free agent pond. Whether that bet pays off is another story. But they’re not panicking. Not yet.
