Alex Ovechkin Just Signed a One-Year Extension. His Coach Says He’s Still Got It.

Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery didn’t hesitate when asked about Alex Ovechkin after the team locked him up for another season. The 39-year-old captain signed a one-year extension that will bring him back for a 22nd year in the NHL, and Carbery made it clear he expects Ovechkin to keep doing what he’s always done.

“He can still continue to defy odds and be a very productive, good NHL player for the Washington Capitals and help us win a lot of hockey games,” Carbery said Friday via NHL.com. “That’s the way that I see it going. And then also continue to be the leader that he’s been through his career as our captain and continue to help a winning team, hopefully a playoff team, and young players inside of that continue to grow their game and develop and get to the next level.”

Ovechkin’s return was never guaranteed. There was chatter he might hang it up after breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record in April 2025, finishing the season with 895 career goals last we counted. But the guy who went first overall in 2004 isn’t done. The Capitals picked him one spot ahead of Evgeni Malkin, and that rivalry with the Penguins still has some juice left.

The numbers are still there

Last season Ovechkin put up 32 goals and 32 assists. Not bad for a guy who turned 39 in September. Age keeps being treated like a number for him, and it’s hard to argue when you look at what he did after passing Gretzky. He didn’t slow down. He just kept scoring.

Carbery, who took over as head coach in 2023, has watched Ovechkin up close for two seasons now. He sees a guy who still shows up and does the work. The coach didn’t get into flowery language about legacy or history. He talked about winning games and developing young players. That’s the practical side of having the greatest goal scorer ever on your roster.

Hall of Fame is coming

Ovechkin will be a first-ballot Hall of Famer three years after his career ends. That’s automatic. But the interesting thing is he’s still adding to the resume. Every goal from here on out extends a record that might stand for decades. Gretzky’s 894 looked untouchable for a long time. Now Ovechkin has 895 and counting.

The Capitals didn’t overthink this. They brought their guy back. One year. No drama. Just a captain who still leads and a coach who believes in him. That’s the whole story, and it’s a good one.
