Aston Villa’s transfer plans took a sharp turn this week. Within hours, the club learned that Manchester United had triggered a €41 million release clause for one of their players, and Paris Saint-Germain was doing the same for Lucas Digne at around €10 million. That kind of news forces a response.
Digne’s move won’t be official until after he finishes playing in the World Cup with France. But Villa know what’s coming, so they’re already moving. The club is accelerating talks with AC Milan for left-back Pervis Estupinan, according to multiple reports including transfer insider Fabrizio Romano.
Estupinan’s time at Milan was rough
The 28-year-old Ecuadorian arrived at San Siro last year from Brighton for €17 million plus €2 million in add-ons. It didn’t click. In 22 competitive appearances for the Rossoneri, he managed one goal and one assist. He also picked up a red card. For a guy expected to lock down the left flank, it was a disappointing season.
New Milan coach Ruben Amorim has made it clear he wants different options at that position. So Estupinan is available, and Villa see a chance to bring him back to the Premier League.
This isn’t a sudden interest, either. Reports had already linked Villa to Estupinan before the Digne news broke. The timing just made it urgent.
Villa’s window got complicated fast
Losing Digne isn’t ideal, but the club has money coming in from the Digne and potentially from other sales. The question is whether Estupinan can rediscover the form he showed at Brighton, where he looked like a solid Premier League starter. His pace and crossing ability were real assets there. Milan was a different story.
If the deal goes through, Estupinan would return to a league he knows and a system that might fit him better. Villa need a left back who can contribute right away, not a project.
The World Cup will delay Digne’s departure paperwork, but Villa aren’t waiting around. They’re in active talks, and Estupinan’s situation at Milan makes a sale relatively straightforward. This could get done fast.
