Felix Nmecha isn’t hiding it. He wants to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer, and a return to English football is the preference.
The 25-year-old German midfielder has been one of the Bundesliga’s better box-to-box threats this season. Then he went and showed out at the World Cup, scoring twice in Germany’s opener against Curacao and setting up Deniz Undav for a late winner against Ivory Coast. That kind of performance tends to get people’s attention.
Manchester United and Liverpool are the two Premier League clubs most heavily linked so far. But they’re not alone. Real Madrid and Barcelona have also been keeping tabs, according to reports out of Europe. Nmecha’s camp has made it clear they’re open to moving, and TEAMtalk says a Premier League transfer is now considered a “very realistic” possibility before the window closes.
Here’s the part that makes this complicated. Nmecha signed a new contract with Dortmund back in March, and it doesn’t include a release clause. That gives the German club some leverage. But sources around the player have suggested that an offer around €60 million — roughly £52 million — might be enough to get Dortmund to the table.
From City’s academy to Dortmund’s engine room
Nmecha came up through Manchester City’s youth system. He made all of three first-team appearances before heading back to Germany, first with Wolfsburg and then Dortmund. That stint in England was brief, but he knows the league and the lifestyle. That familiarity probably makes the idea of coming back more appealing than it would be for a guy who’s never played there.
At Dortmund, he’s turned into the kind of midfielder who can carry the ball from deep, arrive late in the box, and put in the defensive work too. That’s a rare combo, and Premier League teams are always hunting for it.
The question is whether United or Liverpool — or one of the Spanish giants — actually push the button at that asking price. Dortmund doesn’t need to sell. They let him sign a new deal in March specifically to protect their position. But €60 million is real money, and every club has a number.
Right now, Nmecha’s focus is on Germany’s World Cup run. But once that’s done, don’t be surprised if his phone doesn’t stop ringing.
